Colorado District 7 Championship 2020

March 1, 2020

Congratulations to the Genoa-Hugo lady pirates on their Colorado District 7 Championship win. Good luck at Regionals.

Evangelical Christian Academy vs. Pikes Peak Christian Recap.

Each team shot plenty of lay ups in the first quarter. ECA starts the game with a full court press and is trying to dictate tempo from the start. Pikes Peak is playing tough and grinds out the first quarter leading with a score of 12-11.

With the start of the second quarter, ECA backs off of the full court press. They start to settle in and build a lead. With good outside shooting and ball movement, they appear to have the game under control. They are playing at their place and controlling tempo. ECA has a deep bench with 13 kids on the team. PPC has eight in the team and their rotation appears to really only include 6 players.

Game Highlights

Half time ends with Evangelical Christian ahead with a score of 34 to 21.

The third quarter is much of the same. ECA controlling the tempo which leads to little opportunity for PPC. ECA continues to shoot well. They continue to build their lead and finish the third quarter at 48-30.

The fourth quarter has ECA stalling a majority of the time. They have a commanding lead and there is no reason to run up the score. ECA looks strong and finished the game 60-37. Congratulations ECA for your victory and winning the Colorado District 7 Championship for boys basketball.

It will be interesting to see how both of these teams fair in the regional tournament next week hosted at the La Junta high school gym in La Junta, Colorado. The Regional Brackets have been released and can be found here.

Region 3 Matchups.

Pikes Peak Christian will face South Baca @ 6:30pm on Friday night. If they win, they will face Kit Carson on Saturday at 6:30.

Evangelical Christian will receive a bye and play against the winner of Kim/Branson vs. Granada. Their game will be March 7th @12:30 pm in La Junta.

The rest of Region three will be interesting. Granada appears to be peaking and playing well at the end of the season. Granada coach Manuel Gonzales is retiring after 47 years of coaching and his team is starting to come alive after a 6-16 regular season record. Kim/Branson has played well this year. The Mustangs have been in the top ten ranked teams in the state for a majority of the season. Their coach uses an unorthodox substitution method often subbing 5 players at a time to keep their rotation fresh. They show a lot of depth from their bench.

Kit Carson is always a tough team in 1A They have plenty of tradition and have been in the state rankings all season. Kit Carson is coming off a three point victory against Cheraw in their district championship.

Cheraw is another team that will be hard to beat. They face off against Genoa-Hugo in their first round action and the winner of that game will play Walsh. Walsh was in the state tournament last year and has some returning players who know how to get the job done. They are a physical team with a lot of heart. They have also been spending a lot of the season ranked in the top 5.

We look forward to great action this coming weekend. Good luck to all of the teams. I hope you all play well and leave it all on the court regardless of the outcome.
